چکیده

We have computed the elastic constant tensor for PbZrTiOe, PZT 50/50, in the rhombohedral structure. We find it to be very soft elastically, and the Young's modulus to be very anisotropic. Our results for PZT are compared with literature values on other oxide perovskites, and the new experimental results on PMN-PT and PZN-PT. The elastic response is an important part of the electromechanical response, and should be studied experimentally and theoretically to help build up a systemic understanding of electromechanical materials. We find that anisotropy in Young's modulus and elastic softness may be key discriminators in evaluating or improving electromechanical properties.

Piezoelectric enhancement under negative pressure

Enhancement of ferroelectric properties, both spontaneous polarization and Curie temperature under negative pressure had been predicted in the past from first principles and recently confirmed experimentally. In contrast, piezoelectric properties are expected to increase by positive pressure, through polarization rotation. Here we investigate the piezoelectric response of the classical PbTiO3, ...

First Principles Derivation of Displacement and Stress Function for Three-Dimensional Elastostatic Problems, and Application to the Flexural Analysis of Thick Circular Plates

In this study, stress and displacement functions of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity for homogeneous isotropic bodies are derived from first principles from the differential equations of equilibrium, the generalized stress – strain laws and the geometric relations of strain and displacement. It is found that the stress and displacement functions must be biharmonic functions. The deriv...

ON MAXWELL'S STRESS FUNCTIONS FOR SOLVING THREE DIMENSIONAL ELASTICITY PROBLEMS IN THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY

The governing equations of three dimensional elasticity problems include the six Beltrami-Michell stress compatibility equations, the three differential equations of equilibrium, and the six material constitutive relations; and these are usually solved subject to the boundary conditions. The system of fifteen differential equations is usually difficult to solve, and simplified methods are usual...

Study of elastic and piezoelectric properties of two-dimensional hexagonal III-V binary compounds: First-principles calculations

In this work, using plane wave method in the framework of density-functional theory, we calculated clamped-ion and relaxed-ion elasticity, stress and strain piezoelectric independent coefficients for seven stable combinations of honeycomb monolayers XY (X:B,Al,Ga,In ; Y:N,P,As,Sb). The coefficients calculations by two methods of density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) and finite differenc...

The Influence of Small Quantities of Oxygen in the Structure, Microstructure, Hardness, Elasticity Modulus and Cytocompatibility of Ti-Zr Alloys for Dental Applications

The mechanical properties of Ti alloys are changed significantly with the addition of interstitial elements, such as oxygen. Because oxygen is a strong stabilizer of the α phase and has an effect on hardening in a solid solution, it has aroused great interest in the biomedical area. In this paper, Ti-Zr alloys were subjected to a doping process with small amounts of oxygen. The influence of int...
